Father's day is coming up, and while we are thinking up the perfect father's day gifts, we would also like to think of the perfect father's day dessert...

Since the day to celebrate dad falls in these hot summer months, I thought the perfect celebratory dessert would be sweet, light, cool and fruity!

This recipe is a super easy spin on a classic strawberry shortcake. We've baked (or bought) an angel cake, sliced it up and threw it on the grill. Grilling the angel food cake gives it a little extra crunch on the very top....but when you bite in it's still perfectly light and airy.

For the creamy, fruity part we went ahead and chopped up fresh sweet strawberries and combined them with cool whip. This gives the cool whip a burst of berry flavor and pretty color.

To top it off, we even  added some extra fruit (you can add dad's favorites) and get as colorful as you like.

This dessert looks so gorgeous and is quick and easy to put together. For a shortcut, you can definitely use store bought cake or use angel food cake mix.

This recipe works perfect following a delicious BBQ

What you need:

  • 1 box angel food cake mix (bake as directed on box)
  • 2 cups refrigerated whipped topping
  • 2 cups strawberries (1 cup chopped small, 1 cup sliced
  • assorted cut up fruits of your choice (optional)

Begin by baking the angel cake as directed on box( I used loaf pans so the slices are rectangular, I also greased my pans because they needed it; cake came out much easier)

Cool cake.

In a bowl combine whipped topping with chopped strawberries, place in fridge until ready to use.

Slice angel cake into slices then grill on each side about 3 mins

Top with berry whipped topping and fruit
