Here in Houston, the weather has been playing games with us. One day we are looking for scarves and trying to bundle up, and the next day it’s sunny, breezy, and you will be more than comfortable in sandals. It just makes no sense at all. Well, the whole country has been through quite a chill this past week, the drastic weather change was known as a “polar vortex” according to weather experts. In light of such cold weather I was inspired to create a warm, wholesome dish and I thought what could be better than homemade Salisbury Steak.





I really wanted to make something different, I pulled out ground beef but I wanted something different..not meatloaf, burgers, tacos, or meatballs. I had an aha! moment when Salisbury Steak came to mind.

The name may be a tad misleading since it’s fundamentally not steak, but deliciously flavored beef patties with a rich mushroom sauce is just so palate pleasing, I don’t think it matters what you call it.

I paired the steak with classic, creamy mashed potatoes and decided a wedge salad would add a nice touch. It was also very simple to just cut up a wedge of iceberg lettuce and dress it up to our liking.

This dish really compliments a cold day, so when the temperature decides to drop incredibly low, this recipe is definitely a go-to!


What you need:

  • 1 lb ground beef/sirloin
  • 1 packet onion soup mix
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp ketchup

Mushroom Gravy

  • 1 med onion, chopped
  • 1 8oz pkg. mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 1/2 cup beef stock
  • 3-4 dashes worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • salt and pepper to taste

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, onion soup mix,ketchup, breadcrumbs, and egg. When combined, form into 4-6 oval patties, score with knife to create steak appearance.

Fry meat patties in skillet on med-high heat, until no longer pink in the center. Remove from heat and remove excess grease.

In same skillet, drizzle with oil and add in onions.Stir and cook onions until soft, add in mushrooms. Cook mushrooms for about 3 minutes. Add beef stock,worcestershire sauce,oregano,and seasoning, reduce heat and simmer.

In a small bowl combine melted butter and flour to form a roux, whisk into gravy and continue to simmer until thickened. Add patties back into skillet, spoon gravy over patties and heat up for a few additional minutes. Serve with your choice of favorite sides.
